When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it was community members who acted first. From the Margins to the Centre desrcribes how Filipino frontline workers and volunteers in Alberta came together through Filipinos Rising for Inclusion and Equity to Nurture Democracy Society (FRIENDS) to lead a powerful, community-based crisis response.
Guided by the Filipino values of bayanihan (collective care) and pakikipagkapwa-tao (shared humanity), they built trust, organized support, and advocated for equity and inclusion during one of the province’s hardest moments. This report highlights a community-led model for crisis response and recovery, one that proves lasting change begins at the grassroots.
