Project: Building Community Capacities to address Racism - Awareness Action and Accountability
Contract Dates: August 31, 2025 - July 31, 2027
FRIENDS is a volunteer-run organization working to build the capacities of our community, to make them aware of their strength and ability to lead change. We aim to make services and resources equitable and accessible to communities. FRIENDS is involved in leadership development, public information, community organizing, civic participation, and engaging agencies and institutions.
The project’s goal is to increase the capacities of the Filipino-Canadian and other racialized communities to address racism by building deeper awareness, facilitating collective action, and encouraging long-term commitment to equity action. The project starts from lived and examined experiences as sources of learning and commitment, adapts to relevant learning resources, and develops effective ways of engaging service and public systems.
Project Lead Roles and Responsibilities:
- Ensure that the different elements of the project are effectively implemented
- Design and oversee the engagement and learning sessions in collaboration with participating organizations
- Lead in engaging and supporting collaborating organizations
- Work with facilitators to undertake specific learning and action planning sessions
- Review and summarize relevant information and documents related to community experiences of racism
- Lead in writing up results of the learning and action planning sessions including insights and recommendations
- Identify and engage with service and institutional partners to engage in conversations about community groups’ strategies
- Facilitate discussions between FRIENDS, community members, and agencies in incorporating insights from sessions into current approaches to program and service delivery
- Help recruit contractors for facilitation, training design, and evaluation for different activities of the project
- Provide oversight on the evaluation of the project
- Write up an overall report on the project
- Conduct other activities and duties in alignment with the project objectives and design as mutually agreed upon
- Adhere to the values and work practices of FRIENDS
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated understanding of the issue of racism and alignment with FRIENDS’ values of equity, accessibility, and community empowerment
- At least two years of demonstrated project coordination capacity
- Understanding of participatory research and popular education
- Demonstrated understanding of and capacity for community development
- Degree or diploma in social sciences or equivalent experiences in the community
- Demonstrated capacity for facilitation and community engagement
- Strong communication and writing skills
- Demonstrated ability to work with community volunteers and partners in the not-for-profit community
- Can work in a flexible environment and be self-motivated
Hours/Week: 30
Annual salary: $46,000.00 with benefits
